Affiliate-Led Hospitals Named to Working Mother's '100 Best' List

Eight hospitals and health systems led by ACHE affiliates were named to Working Mother magazine's '100 Best Companies for Working Mothers' list for 2004. Working Mother rates companies based on childcare, flexibility, leave for new parents, work/life benefits, and advancement for women. The eight affiliate-led organizations named to the list are:

* Bon Secours Richmond (VA) Health System, led by president and chief executive officer Peter J. Bernard, FACHE

* Bronson Healthcare Group, Kalamazoo, MI, led by president and chief executive officer Frank J. Sardone

* JFK Medical Center, Atlantis, FL, led by chief executive officer Gina Melby

* King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY, led by president and chief executive officer Fred L. Jackson, FACHE

* Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Chicago, led by president and chief executive officer Gary A. Mecklenburg, CHE

* Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC, led by president Deborah W. Davis, FACHE

Mecklenburg, Slunecka Named to National Health IT Commission

Two ACHE affiliates were recently named to the Commission on Systemic Interoperability: Gary A. Mecklenburg, CHE, president and chief executive officer of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in Chicago, and Fredrick W. Slunecka, FACHE, regional president of Avera McKennan Health in Sioux Falls, SD. The commission is charged by Congress with developing a plan by October 31, 2005, for adopting and implementing technology standards to make the nation's healthcare IT systems work together.

Affiliate-Led Organizations Named to AARP's Best Companies List

Several hospitals and health systems led by ACHE affiliates were named to AARP's 2004 list of 'Best . Employers for Workers over 50.' They are:

* Beaumont Hospitals, Southfield, MI, led by John D. Labriola, FACHE, senior vice president and hospital director of William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, and Eugene E Michalski, CHE, senior vice president and hospital director of William Beaumont Hospital in Troy

* Bon secours Richmond (VA) Health System, led by president and chief executive officer Peter J. Bernard, FACHE

* Centegra Health System, Woodstock, IL, led by president and chief executive officer Michael S. Eesley, FACHE

* North Memorial Healthcare, Robbinsdale, MN, led by president and chief executive officer Scott R. Anderson, CHE

* Scottsdale (AZ) Healthcare, led by president and chief executive officer Max PoU, FACHE

* Scripps Health, San Diego, led by president and chief executive officer Christopher D. Van Gorder, FACHE

The organizations were recognized for employment policies and practices favorable to older workers, including recruiting practices, training opportunities, health benefits, pension plans, and alternative work arrangements.

Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Wins HIMSS Award

Evanston (IL) Northwestern Healthcare won the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's 2004 Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence for implementing an integrated electronic health record throughout its three acute care hospitals and in 65 offices of its medical group. Led by president and chief executive officer Mark R. Neaman, FACHE, a past Chairman of ACHE, ENH was recognized for its leadership commitment to the process and for realizing tangible benefits in quality, safety, and operating efficiency.

Kaczmarek Named to AHRMM Board

David Kaczmarek, vice president for McFaul & Lyons Group in Derry, NH, has been elected to the board of the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management. AHRMM-a personal membership group of the American Hospital Association-leads, educates, and promotes the healthcare resource and materials management profession. Kaczmarek will represent Region 1 on the board.

Senne Appointed to Florida Health Insurance Plan

Jerry Senne, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Health First Health Plans, Rockledge, FL, has been appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to the board of directors of the Florida Health Insurance Plan. The plan was passed in 2004 by the state insurance reform legislation as a way to provide health insurance coverage for uninsured Floridians.

Sanford Elected AONE President-Elect

Kathleen D. Sanford, D.B.A., R.N., FACHE, vice president of nursing and administrator of Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton, WA, has been elected president-elect of the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Sanford, who served on the AONE board of directors prior to being named president-elect, will serve as president of the organization in 2006.

ACHE Affiliates Elected to THA Board

Several ACHE affiliates were recently elected to the Tennessee Hospital Association's board of directors. Dennis L. Vonderfecht, FACHE, president of Mountain States Health Alliance, Johnson City, was installed as chairman. William M. Gracey, FACHE, chief operating officer of LifePoint Hospitals, Inc., Brentwood, was elected chairman-elect.
